Match Report

Clydebank's first venture into the Scottish Qualifying Cup ended in heavy defeat as Gala Fairydean produced a devastating second-half display to run out 9-1 winners at Netherdale.

The final score suggests a one-sided contest, but for much of the first half Clydebank competed well and were regarded by many in the large crowd as the toughest opponents Fairydean had faced that season. The Bankies attacked with confidence through McLeish and O'Brien on the wings and created several anxious moments for the home defence before the game slipped away from them.

Fairydean took the lead after seven minutes when Benvie broke down the left and crossed for Peacock, whose header found Wyles waiting to slip the ball past Brown.

Despite falling behind, Clydebank continued to threaten. Bustard caused problems for the home defence and the visitors enjoyed several promising spells, although they found goalkeeper Duncan and the Fairydean rearguard difficult to break down.

The home side doubled their lead six minutes before the interval. Wyles outpaced Wark on the right and delivered a cross which Cornwall headed into the roof of the net.

Clydebank responded almost immediately. Bustard won possession and threaded a pass through to Hodgson, who calmly guided the ball beyond Duncan to reduce the deficit to 2-1.

Any hopes of reaching the interval only a goal behind were dashed in the closing moments of the half when Fairydean were awarded a penalty after Holloran was adjudged to have fouled Benvie. Player-manager Kirk converted from the spot to restore the two-goal advantage.

The decisive moment came immediately after the restart. Within a minute of the second half beginning, Benvie again created the opening and Wyles applied the finishing touch to make it 4-1.

From that point Fairydean took complete control. Cuthbert struck twice in quick succession, first with a powerful effort from 25 yards and then from a Cornwall cut-back. Cornwall then added two further goals to complete his hat-trick, the first after driving through the middle and the second with a well-placed header.

Peacock completed the scoring when he fired home from 25 yards to cap an impressive attacking display by the home side.

Although overwhelmed during the second half, Clydebank continued to battle and almost added to their tally late in the game. Duncan produced excellent saves to deny both McGill and Moy, while Brown at the opposite end prevented the scoreline becoming even heavier with a series of fine stops under constant pressure.

The Border Telegraph described Fairydean's performance as "the best display they could have ever produced" and praised the contribution of Cornwall, whose hat-trick and all-round play made him the outstanding performer on the day.

For Clydebank, the result brought a disappointing end to their involvement in the competition, but the scoreline should not obscure the fact that the visitors had matched their opponents for long periods of the first half before Fairydean produced a ruthless display after the interval.
