Clydebank suffered a 3-1 defeat at Bayview as East Fife Reserves gained the upper hand in a closely contested Combined Reserve League encounter.
Although the scoreline suggests a comfortable home victory, the match was evenly balanced for long periods and only a slight edge in finishing separated the two sides.
Both teams began positively and the game was played at a good pace, with chances being created at either end. It was East Fife who made the breakthrough after 27 minutes when Donnelly slipped the ball through to Smart, who finished neatly beyond Ronnie Wilson.
Clydebank continued to press for an equaliser and came close on several occasions, but the Fifers struck again nine minutes later. Cunningham's effort was only partially dealt with and Christie reacted quickest to convert the rebound and make it 2-0.
The Bankies responded well to the setback and reduced the deficit a minute before the interval. Andy O'Brien found the net to ensure Clydebank remained firmly in the contest at half-time.
The visitors carried that momentum into the early stages of the second half and Tony Moy and Tom Connelly were particularly influential as Clydebank searched for a leveller.
However, the match took a controversial turn when Connelly was ordered off following an off-the-ball incident involving East Fife full-back Gordon Hamilton. The dismissal proved a significant blow to Clydebank's hopes, especially as Connelly had been one of their most dangerous attacking players.
Despite being reduced to ten men, the Bankies continued to compete, but East Fife eventually secured the points with a third goal. After causing problems throughout the afternoon with a series of dangerous efforts, Cunningham finally got the goal his performance deserved when he collected a pass from Christie and drove the ball past Wilson.
The result gave East Fife the edge in a match between two well-matched sides, although Clydebank could take some encouragement from a spirited display despite finishing the game a man short.
