Match Report

Clydebank Press

Hero of Clydebank's team in this challenge match was centre-forward Connelly. He scored two superb goals the winner just 5 minutes before time to defeat Second Division Stenhousemuir.

Connelly's victory goal was a solo endeavour and one which the small crowd of supporters greatly appreciated. He cleverly outwitted three Muir defenders inside their own goal area, finally tunnelling the ball into the rear of the net.

Both teams were slow in settling and in the opening exchanges numerous chances were carelessly thrown away. But it was not long until Clydebank turned on the pressure and gave a brilliant performance of constructive football.

Their reward came in the 29th minute when centre forward Connelly put Clydebank ahead. Moy managed to tap the ball before being sandwiched by 'Muir defenders to Connelly, who calmly placed home.

Muir were quick to retaliate and came near to equalising when Smith hit the post with a header. But Clydebank again came back and right up to the half-time whistle they continually pressedm for a second goal.

A double-barrelled attempt by both 'Bankie wingers McLeish and McGhee amazingly failed. Each shot was blocked by 'Muir backs.

In the restart Stenhousemuir' looked, a more confident team and soon proved their quality by their fine football. Efforts by all the forwards were accurate and powerful but it was thanks to the tall and sturdy goalkeeper Brown who prevented the visitors from level-pegging:

Eventually the spell broke and in the 58th minute a direct free-kick gave 'Muir the desperate equaliser. Right-back Hutton took the kick and a well taken shot plunged homewards.

From then on Bankies forwards battled hard for the victory goal.

At this stage the outstanding player was right-winger McLeish. His lightning sprints left on many occasions Muir defenders Russell and Brown completely bewildered. He never let his team down but Clydebank badly downed him or they would have easily trebled their final score.

The frequent openings McLeish engineered for the inside trio were uncountable but every time. his workmanship was marred by his colleagues' carelessness.

In spite of this Connelly finally struck gold, and pulled Clydebank high to clinch this contest. He netted the winner in the 85th minute.

Clydebank tried to increase their lead but the now muddy conditions made play very difficult. On one occasion a close-range shot by J. Rankin went wildly by the post.
