Match Report

Sunday Post

A brilliantly taken goal by Andy Roxburgh paved the way for this Falkirk victory and made their quarter final place a racing certainty.

The Bairns were finding Clydebank a hot handful when the inside man struck. A Hoggan corner was edged towards Roxburgh, who controlled the awkward ball, wheeled, and sent a great shot into the far corner.

Falkirk were worthy of their win, but Clydebank fought hard and might well have upset the applecart if the breaks had gone their way. For example, at vital moments Millar and Gibson had to clear off the line with Rennie beaten.

But Falkirk had that decisive touch in front of goal.

Following an all-out attack, a Hoggan corner was flicked on by Roxburgh for Ferguson to stab home from close range.

Then, in injury time, Millar sent a free kick round the Clydebank defensive wall and straight into the net. For Falkirk, Ford, Abel, and Hoggan looked First Division performers. Dougie Hay was Clydebank's man, but new signing Peter Kane came on too late to make a real impression.

Falkirk Herald

Two things stood out in this Falkirk win at Kilbowie Park on Saturday - a victory that more or less clinched the Bairns' League Cup quarter-final place.

First of all, the match proved a triumph for the younger members of the Brockville brigade - because I have never seen Robert Ford and Wilson Hoggan turn in such electrifying performances.

Secondly, the win again showed how adept this Falkirk side have become at taking chances – because I can recall only one scoring opportunity being passed up in the 90 minutes.

There were other less inspiring moments, for Falkirk hit some patchy spells against an aggressive Bankies outfit and while they thoroughly deserved their win, a 3-0 margin flattered them slightly.

Despite that, though, this was the day when Hoggan and Ford showed that they are more than ready for the big time of First Division football.

Hoagy was a stand-out in attack, taking on the entire home defence on his own at times and making some terrific bursts down each wing. For the first hour, he was at outside-right and he ended the match on the left-wing.

Fittingly, it was from corners of his that Falkirk scored their first and second goals. His only mistake was in clicking Gray's heels needlessly in the 56th minute and finding his name going into the referee's book.

Robert Ford powered his way through the match and was a sixth forward all day. On this form, he can look forward to a great season. The rest of the defence played steadily and while Rennie and Abel were given some anxious moments by Bankies' star winger Caskie, they still stopped him from netting the goal his consistency deserved.

John Markie shut out Jackson and substitute Kane in turn. George Gibson mopped up every loose ball - and George Miller made a vital contribution, kicking a certain scorer off the line in the 11th minute and then sealing the win with a magnificent free-kick goal in injury time.

In front, Tom Young had a quiet afternoon, and Alex Ferguson and Andy Roxburgh were also kept quieter than usual because of some pretty tough home tackling, particularly by Ruddy, Fallon and even centre-forward Jackson who was booked for a foul on Ford when the ball was 20 yards away.

Andy and Fergie still tied up the points, however, with great goals in the 42nd and 76th minutes. The first was a gem. Hoggan's corner into the middle was headed by Setterington to Roxburgh. Andy, with his back to goal, flicked it into the air with his right foot, pivoted in the same movement – and volleyed it, still with his right, high into the net. A masterpiece of controlled football.

The goal that settled the big contingent of Falkirk fans in the sun-drenched 3000 crowd came 14 minutes from the end - and after the home side had come dangerously near to equalising several times.

Roxburgh and Ruddy raced to meet a low Hoggan corner, this time from the left-wing. Andy may just have got a touch to it, but whether or not, his dash was enough to throw the defence off guard and when the ball flashed across the six-yard box, there was Ferguson to sweep it past McDonald.

And in the second minute of injury time, after Fallon downed Ferguson, George Miller foxed friend and foe alike when he feinted to hoist a free-kick into goal - and suddenly powered it into the opposite corner of the net, reminiscent of the brace of frees he collected at Hamilton last season.

Denis Setterington turned on some slick play early on but he took a knock and eventually hirpled off to be replaced in the final 14 minutes by Robert Robinson.

Clydebank, a courageous young side, will play worse and win. But for goal-line clearances by Miller and Gibson, they might have come closer. Jackson also headed against the upright when an equaliser looked on.

But the Bairns had the composure. They had the new inspiration of Ford and Hoggan. And they had this refreshing killer touch near goal.
