Match Report

Daily Record

Falkirk lost their 100 per cent record in this all-action draw with Clydebank at Brockville.

The Falkirk Sharpshooters, Scotland's top scorers Just couldn't unlock this solid Bankies defence and had to be content with a share of the points.

Falkirk took an early lead through a glorious goal by wing-half Robert Ford in 18 minutes.

A blistering Alex Scott drive struck a defender and rebounded to Ford, whose left-foot first-timer from 25 yards soared high into the net past the sprawling McDonald.

Before the interval Hay was warned for a foul on Setterington.

Falkirk resumed with Hoggan replacing Young, who took a first-half leg knock, and in the first minute Setterington hit a beauty against the post from 20 yards.

Then a real shock for Falkirk in 68 minutes.

Caskie hared down the right wing in a fine solo dash and his cross cum shot was hit home by Munro.

Falkirk Herald

Falkirk wound up their fine League Cup performances more than relieved to hear the final whistle in a tough tussle midweek with Clydebank. The Bankies succeeded where others failed and deprived the Bairns of their 100 per cent record, and near the end of a nail-biting second half on Wednesday, the visitors all but took full points, only a desperate Gibson goalmouth clearance preventing Clydebank from scoring the winner.

While Falkirk dropped a point they weren't all that bad. Weaned on success the Falkirk supporters no doubt expected their favourites to go to town against Clydebank.

That they didn't was due to a combination of circumstances - bad luck, careless finishing, and heroic work between the sticks by goalkeeper McDonald.

Everyone expected a 25-yard drive from right-half Robert Ford in 18 minutes to set the Bairns on the victory trail as it climaxed a period of sustained pressure during which the Bairns promised to sweep Bankies right off the park.

But by their failure to convert even half their opportunities, the Bairns allowed Bankies off the hook, and the visitors didn't need any second bidding.

And when a first-half leg injury to centre Tom Young led to his being substituted at half-time by Wilson Hoggan, Falkirk appeared to lose their fluent, first-half rhythm.

The young Bankies, who looked on this performance as if they will be among the contenders this season for the Second Division spoils, got their second wind, and deserved to draw level midway through the second half, inside-left Munro sweeping home a cross-cum-shot from outside-left Caskie after he had beaten four men in a brilliant solo run.

Falkirk opened their chapter of bad luck right from the whistle. Fergie, who finished the game with a leg knock, came near twice to scoring - first with a diving header which grazed the wrong side of the post, and then with a snap shot which streaked over the bar with McDonald pawing thin air.

The goal had to come, and in 18 minutes the Bairns opened their account with a truly memorable goal.

Tom Young accepted a ball midway in the Bankies' half. He beat two men, and staved off a tough tackle but just as he fell injured, he slipped the ball across to Alex. Scott, whose first-time shot was deflected right into the path of the thundering Ford, whose left-foot drive streaked into the postage stamp corner.

Falkirk's joy was tempered by the injury to Young, who slowed down so much he had to be substituted later on. Then Denis Setterington, whose drive and power did much to unsettle the Bankies at this stage, took a frightful knock which effectively put paid to him. He ran on to a Scott slip and leathered the ball goalward. Unfortunately the ball rebounded off a defender at point-blank range and came up and struck Denis on the face. He fell pole-axed. Thus virtually ending Falkirk's threat. They never regained their early dominance.

A flashing header right on the interval by Jackson which left Rennie helpless, only to go narrowly past, served timely warning that the Bankies were determined to make a fight of it.

On the resumption, with Wilson Hoggan taking an early knock, Clydebank came surging into the game. Like the Bairns early on, they couldn't accept their chances. They almost paid the penalty when a Setterington effort from 20 yards rebounded from the crossbar with McDonald beaten. Then Fergie, who was more subdued than in recent matches, shot wide from a Setterington pass when it seemed easier to net.

With chances going abegging at one end, Clydebank scampered away and showed Falkirk how it should be done. Or rather Caskie did. He trailed the ball through the Falkirk defence, and passed to Munro who slid the ball home to put the Bankies right back in contention.

Gibson and Rennie between them deflected a certain goal bound drive for a corner then the cultured sweeper again saved Falkirk's bacon with the desperate goal-line clearance which preserved Falkirk's unbeaten record.

Falkirk have undoubtedly played better but injuries to Young, Setterington, McLaughlan, Ferguson and Hoggan, knocked the Bairns out of their stride. And with a young, determined team like Clydebank, Falkirk did well to salvage a draw.
