Match Report

Evening News and Star

Queen's began their League programme at home to Clydebank today, looking for their first win after a run of six games in the League Cup without victory, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring.

McIntyre had the ball in the net in the fourth minute following a good move by McChesney, Donald and Evans, but the linesman's flag went up for offside.

Evans flashed a shot across the face of the goal and then McDonald had to throw himself on the ball to smother a Sloan shot. Wilson, who had substituted for the injured Hay got in a terrific shot which Ball fingered past.

Then in the 16th minute Clydebank took the lead when Kane crossed from the right and Munro, from ten yards, stroked the ball into the net.

Offside again robbed Queen's of a goal when McIntyre put the ball into the net from a Sloan centre. Dempster was taken off after getting a shoulder knock and Houliston took his place.

Only three minutes of the second half had gone when Houliston took a Donald centre first time and crashed the ball into the net. McLean was taken off with a head wound after a heading clash with Wilson.

Evans gathered a centre neatly swept through by Sloan and hit the ball into the net in the 62nd minute.

Sunday Post

Two opportunist goals from substitute Keith Houliston, son of former Scottish internationalist Billy Houliston, gave Queens the points.

Clydebank, with Jackson, Love, and Munro prominent, had a good first half and took an early lead, but their defence was always suspect, and the home forwards, with Donald the star, dominated the second-half exchanges.

Queens pressed constantly at the start and frequently had McDonald in trouble. But the opening goal came at the other end when Munro, Bankies' best forward, first-timed a Peter Kane cross past the surprised Allan Ball.

But after the interval, it was all Queens, and a Houliston thunderbolt from 20 yards levelled the scores.

Evans, formerly of Kilmarnock, put them ahead after a clever run by Sloan, and before the end Houliston got his second with a low shot which went in off the upright.

Sunday Mail

Queen of the South managed to win but for a long period it looked as though their old failing in front of goal was going to cost them dearly.

Chances were made and missed before they pulled level after losing an early goal. Victory was only assured ten minutes from the end.

That was when young Keith Houliston - son of former Queen's and Scotland centre Billy scored his second goal of the game off the post.

Queens started off brightly and the man who caused havoc in the Bankies' defence was winger Joe Sloan, a close-season signing from Cumbernauld United.

But Clydebank scored first in 16 minutes when Munro slammed home a cross from Kane.

Queens tried hard but could not convert their superiority into goals until three minutes after the interval when Houliston crashed home a loose ball from the edge of the penalty box.

The Dumfries side went ahead in 62 minutes when Sloan carved open the Bankies' defence and left Evans to finish off. Then ten minutes from time came that Houliston clincher.
