Match Report

Clydebank Press

This was a very entertaining game in which Clydebank, although they were well and truly beaten, showed plenty of spirit and came near to scoring on several occasions.

The Celtic side showed more class and were too strong for the home side. In the second half Celtic brought on three substitutes as Jock Stein thought that they were not strong enough in the first half. Connelly and Jenkins, the two Maryhill men played extremely well, and Hodgson the other new man was a real tryer at inside right. Tommy Connelly signed last week and the Bankies beat off interest from Leicester City to get their man. Connelly who joined Maryhill Harp at the end of last season from St Flannan's Boys Guild has scored in every game he has played.

The crowd, an estimated 5000, certainly got their money's worth. The first half started with the home side going into attack and for the first twenty minutes they dictated the game. Connelly git his head to a McLeish cross in the 17th minute but the ball went over the bar.

Three minutes later wee Jimmy Johnstone who had been pretty quiet up until then came racing in to score from a Taylor pass, giving Brown no chance.

One of Celtic's Brazilians, Inacio scored in the 30th minute off a rebound from keeper Brown when Taylor put in a hard shot.

One minute later Johnstone was brought down in the box after trying a daring raid and he scored from the penalty spot.

The 33rd minute saw Celtic there again. This time the goal was engineered by wee Johnstone who pushed through a pass to allow Inacio to score.

Celtic were now definitely on top. Though McLeish and Connelly were doing some fine forward play for the Bankies, they did not score because Celtic were strong in defence.

Three minutes after the start of the second half the new Celtic centre Jimmy Quinn scored from a Johnstone pass.

Horn, for the Bankies, forced a corner three minutes later when he sent in a streaking shot, which Kennedy just managed to turn round the post.

At the other end, Inacio showed he could also fairly shoot, when Brown had to reach pretty quickly for one of the Brazilian's power shots.

In the space of two minutes Celtic finalised their overall score. In the 70th minute Henry Quinn scored a beautiful goal from a Taylor pass.

Inacio got his hat trick and team's seventh from a Taylor corner in the 71st minute.

After that Celtic relaxed and Bankies had most of the play. Their goal came in the 80th minute when Connelly put in a great shot and in his eagerness to clear Halpin put it into his own net.

Daily Record

With a barrage of goals Celtic last night replied to a challenge to play for the first time in 30-odd years on Kilbowie Park, Clydebank.

Their wee team treated the 5000 fans - the kick off was delayed ten minutes to let them all in - to a display of high powered soccer which brought a revenue of goals.

Clydebank just couldn't stand up to the pace and footwork of the Celtic forwards who had Brazilians Inacio and Di Sousa together for the first 45 minutes.

It was Clydebank, the team who were formed only this season by brothers Jack and Charlie Steedman who went into the attack first.

And, but for an amazing miss by their centre-forward Connelly, they would certainly have gone into the lead.

In the 12th minute O'Brien beat Craig on the left wing and cross over a deceptive lob which beat Kennedy.

Connolly, standing under the bar somehow managed to head the ball over.

That escape shook Celts into action and after a series of attacks they went ahead.

Taylor beat Holloran and cut the ball back to Johnstone who headed neatly past Brown. Time 20 minutes.

A minute later Di Sousa had a close-range shot cleared on the line by Wark.

The Brazilians had found the slippery pitch and wet ball difficult to control, but they began to show their skill.

And minutes later Brazilian inside left Inacio cracked home no. 2.

A few more minutes and Celtic were three up. This time Jimmy Johnstone netted from a penalty.

There was no holding the wee Celts and in the 33rd minute Inacio slammed the ball against the Clydebank keeper, then slid the rebound into the net for goal no.4.

Charlie Steedman announced at the interval that Jock Stein had decided to "strengthen his team" and Celtic appeared for the second half with three substitutes.

Surprisingly, one of these was young Jimmy Quinn at centre forward for Di Sousa.

Craig took over at Centre half for Cushley while Halpin came in at right-back.

Gray was brought in at left-half in place of Willie O'Neill.

It didn't take long for young O'Neill to settle in. After only three minutes play, he scored.

Johnstone race through on an Inacio pass, rounded Brown, and slipped the ball into the centre forward who prodded it into the empty goal.

Henry Quinn got another for Celts and Inacio headed home the seventh goal two minutes later from a Taylor corner.

Halpin put the ball through his own goal in the 78th minute to give Clydebank their only goal.
