Biography
John McTurk was released by Stirling Albion at the end of the 1964/65 season. He was a tough tackling, take no prisoners full back who was at the veteran stage in his career. He made his one and only appearance in reality as a trialist, in a 1-0 defeat away to East Fife in a Scottish Combined Reserve League game at Bayview on 14th August 1965. Rather than play out a season in this league John McTurk signed for Albion Rovers one week later.
John McTurk was involved in a number of eventful and memorable games in his career. He was in the St. Mirren side that beat Peebles Rovers 10-0 in a Scottish Cup tie with 4 goals from Gerry Baker in 1959. That St. Mirren team would go on to win the Scottish Cup that year, beating Aberdeen 3-1 in the Final, unfortunately John was not in the side that day.
The following season, John was in the St. Mirren side that beat Glasgow University 15-0 in the Scottish Cup with Gerry Baker scoring 10 goals this time, before going off injured in 75 minutes!
On 1 September 1965 John played in an Albion Rovers team containing future Bankie Dick Madden who demolished Airdrie 8-2 in a League Cup tie at Cliftonhill with John Dillon notching 4 goals.
John McTurk was released by Albion Rovers at the end of the season.
