Match Report

Brechin Advertiser

Brechin City, who took their first League points this season off Clydebank on August 21 with 3.1 win at Glebe Park, had a harder struggle at Kilbowie Park last Wednesday against the lively young Bankies. This was acclaimed by many as one of the best matches seen for many a day. Both goals had near scrapes, but both keepers were in sparkling form, and a draw was a fair result.

A crowd of 1800 saw the game which was full of excitement for the whole 90 minutes, with a lot of end-to-end play, City played as a team and all played well. The 4-3-3 tactics paid off.

The visitors owed their point chiefly to their sound defence with Ritchie, Burns and Petrie outstanding. Harry Smith, who came in for O'Donnell, who was injured against East Stirling, was the bugbear of Clydebank's frustrated forwards, Hawkshaw and Caskie. In the second half the City attack picked up and just failed to score. Ward and Sandeman. were the danger men.

City looked like going ahead right away when Sandeman rounded Hay and was only a foot out with the first shot of the game, At the other end Ritchie failed to save a corner from Rutherford but Harrier kicked clear on the line. Keeper Madden deflected a Sandeman shot for a corner.

Clydebank were keeping the visitors in their own half of the field, but the well-packed City defence gave nothing away. Ritchie had a great save after 28 minutes when O'Brien sent in a sizzling shot and the keeper put it over the bar. On another occasion when the keeper was beaten Harrier again made a goal-mouth clearance. Ritchie was injured, but not seriously, in a goal-mouth scramble, Sneddon lost a good chance just before half-time. On the resumption Sandeman was the offender. In the 59th minute he took a low cross from Sandeman and pushed it into the net but was ruled off-side. Brechin came more into the picture now. Sandeman's strong drive just topped the bar, Goodall got his head to a pass from Burns but Madden punched clear. Both sides tried vainly to get a counter. Ritchie saved from Caskie six minutes from time. With only two minutes to go Sandeman's 18- yarder was just off the target.

Daily Record

Bankies went into attack from the kick-off and centre Alan Munro flicked on a Rutherford cross in 20 minutes only to see Harrier pop up on the goal line to boot the ball clear.

Brechin centre Sanderson burst through in 22 minutes but 'keeper Madden deflected his effort for a corner.

Munro's header from a Brockett free kick brought a great save from Ritchie. Then an O'Brien rocket from 30 yards was put over the bar by Ritchie in 35 minutes.

Minutes later Brechin's defence scrambled the ball clear after O'Brien, Caskie, Hawkshaw and Munro all had tries at goal.

Sandison gave Sneddon a clear chance only two minutes after the restart but the Brechin Inside right let the ball run on and Madden saved easily.

Minutes later Sandison had a rocket shot saved then the big Brechin centre sent in a tempting cross - but both Ward and Sneddon slipped in the rush towards goal.

Sandison netted in 59 minutes -but was ruled off-side.

The forwards' finishing was atrocious and it was Brechin left back John Goodall who almost opened the scoring in 80 minutes.

In a fighting finish Bankies left half Hay hit a cannonball shot which beat Ritchie, but the ball slammed back off A post and was cleared.
