Match Report

Sunday Post

With 70 minutes gone, Montrose were four goals up, despite Clydebank's never say die efforts, with Hawkshaw starring.

Bankies had no one to match the finishing power of Kemp and Littlejohn, the centre cracking home two thumping first half goals.

Kemp and Goodall made the score look one-sided but Bankies surged back when Andy Welsh, trying to clear, put past his own keeper. Three goals came in the last six minutes, one by the irrepressible Hawkshaw, but Ally Littlejohn notched another to round off a fine hat trick.

Stewart was a fine keeper, and Welsh and Smith were tops in defence for Montrose. For Bankies Madden did well to keep the score down, his best support coming from Henderson.

Montrose Review

A goal bonanza in the second half-with three in the dying minutes-provided a thrilling finish to the Montrose-Clydebank game at Links Park on Saturday. Clydebank were seldom seen as an attacking force in the first half and, two goals down at half-time, never looked serious contenders.

The older and more experienced Montrose had it almost all their own way. In the opening seconds a rocket from Livingstone streaked across Clydebank's goal. Minutes later Madden easily held a weak attempt from the same player after he had carried a promising Goodall cross past two defenders.

Montrose took advantage of Clydebank's 4-3-3 set up, and their open play tactics had the opposition's forward line stretched to its limits.

Littlejohn opened Montrose's account in the 24th minute after collecting a lob from Livingstone, who had cleverly drawn the defence. The centre got a second 13 minutes' later by slamming home a McDonald cross.

When Kemp put Montrose further ahead in the 65th minute and Goodall made it four minutes later, it looked as if they had the game sewn up but then came a surprise.

A slip by 'keeper Stewart, the only blot in an otherwise superb performance, let Munro through to score Clydebank's first.

As luck would have it, it was a home player who gave them their second. Welsh, in a brave attempt to clear in a goalmouth melee, put the ball into his own net.

With Clydebank still in the running, they threw in all they had. They had left it too late, however, and Littlejohn got his "hat-trick" and Montrose's fifth with a minute left. But the visitors were still not finished, and in the dying seconds Hawkshaw made it three for Clydebank from a penalty. After a period of "needling" Henderson was "booked".

Montrose's attack was in top form, with Livingstone at his best on the wing providing a constant supply of dangerous crosses.

The Bankies at times gave a stylish display, but failed to take advantage of gaps in Montrose's defence.
