Match Report

Clydebank Press

Morton's new look formation fell to a fast moving, slick thinking Clydebank side at Kilbowie on Monday night.

Crawford, in the Greenock goal. put up the shutters against a barrage of shots from all ranges and angles in the first half. Jimmy Caskie, Jackie Woods and Alan Munro flashed the warning lights for the Morton rearguard, who were saved time and again by their keeper.

Ernie Collumbine was absent from Bankies half-back line, but Ian Hawkshaw kept the play flowing from midfield.

The only blot on the inside man's copy book came in the second half after Borge Thorup had "tackled". Hawkshaw took the penalty himself...and notched his second spot kick miss in two weeks. The ball left his boot and soared well over the bar.

But Ian had already endeared himself to the home fans five minutes before this boob. Munro went charging over to the left wing, crossed the ball and Hawkshaw hit it on the drop. Crawford could only watch the flight of this ten yard rocket into the net.

Morton tried to mount a fightback and McNeill gave Bartram and the Greenock inside forward trialist a golden chance with a low cut back, but both men missed the ball.

But after that penalty miss. Morton seemed inspired. They surged upfield again, and once more the man with the ball was George McNeill. This time he decided to hold on to the ball and raced into the penalty box before leaving Madden helpless with a great equaliser.

Butt Clydebank's go-go teenagers fought back for the lead. And in the 75th minute Jimmy Caskie put some power behind a shot to grab the winner for the Bankies.

Clydebank can take heart from this win. Although Morton fielded an unfamiliar line-up, this in no way detracted from the home teams sizzling performance.

Daily Record

Clydebank's classy youngsters completely outshone a makeshift Morton side in this challenge match at Kilbowie Park last night.

The Bankies with seven teenagers in their line-up showed that they will be a team to be reckoned with in the Second Division with a non-stop display of attractive, attacking football. And Morton's defence got into some terrible mix-ups.

Throughout the first half the Bankies - with Jimmy Caskie, Jackie Woods and Alan Munro outstanding - hammered in on Andy Crawford in the Morton goal.

Fortunately for the Greenock side their keeper was in good form. He had two brilliant saves in a hectic five-minute period from Caskie and then Ian Hawkshaw who generalled the eager Clydebank youngsters really well from midfield.

Add to that a Caskie shot which cannoned back off the base of a post with Crawford beaten and a Woods effort which whizzed just past and you realise just how unlucky Clydebank were to be level a half-time.

Morton lost their brilliant young left-half George Douglas before the interval with a knee injury and a young trialist took the Morton youngster's place.

Clydebank kept up the pressure after the restart and it took them only five minutes to go ahead. And a great goal it was, too.

Munro gathered the ball on the left and swung over a great cross to Hawkshaw who took the ball on the drop and hammered an unsavable shot past Crawford from 10 yards out.

Morton, stung by the goal raced straight upfield and George McNeill squared a low ball across the Clydebank goal line. But Per Bartram and Morton's trialist inside-left somehow between them managed to miss the ball.

Four minutes later Clydebank were given a penalty when Borg Thorup felled Hawkshaw inside the penalty area. The blond inside-left took the kick himself but ballooned the ball well over the Morton crossbar.

That escape spurred Morton and McNeill raced up the right wing, cut inside the Morton penalty area and crashed a great shot past Dick Madden for the equaliser.

But Clydebank kept going forward with snappy attacking moves.

And their persistence paid off fifteen minutes from time when Caskie slammed a great shot past Crawford.
