Match Report

Sunday Post

Ayr United manager Ally McLeod must be wondering what has caused the dramatic slump in his team's form in the last three weeks. In that spell Ayr have taken only two points, and have slipped up badly in the promotion race.

They got a share here, but they must be kicking themselves at their failure to clinch both.

Time after time an Ayr forward was left in the open space, but failed completely to put the ball in the net. In the first half, Wilkie had two fine drives which slipped just wide, and Ingram had a number of head flicks well held by Madden.

Ayr's failure to notch the all-important goal annoyed the fans greatly, and there was constant barracking and slow handclapping.

The young Clydebank team were solid in defence, with centre half Fallon outstanding, while up front Ian Hawkshaw looked the forward most likely to score.

Sunday Mail

This sudden form slump cost Ayr another valuable promotion point and they have now taken only two points from their last three games.

Yet credit to this teenage Clydebank side for giving Ayr the runaround in the first half, then playing it cool and steady in defence when Ayr rallied after the interval.

Ferguson, Ayr's only forward of note, could have snatched the winner. He beat three men on the run, but with only the keeper to beat he flicked the ball inches past.

A strangely quiet McCulloch, too, had a chance but he shot against the bar.

Certainly Ayr will have to find the answer to this slump if they are to come out on top after a tough programme in the next few weeks.
