Match Report

Forfar Despatch

The gale was the main opposition on Saturday, blowing straight down the pitch into the east goal but with eddies round the stand which made it very difficult to judge direction and speed of the ball on that side. The Loons had first advantage.

In spite of the conditions play was keen from the start with Clydebank showing more eagerness to the ball (which was, of course, coming back towards them most of the time) and: keeping it close to the ground when they parted. Against the wind they showed potential on the wings and had a centre-forward with football and willingness to move around.

There wasn't a great deal to excite in the early stages and most of the Forfar tries for goal were long range and off the target. A bouncer from Mackle, however, rose unexpectedly under the influence of the gale and Madden had really to stretch.

In 24 minutes an opportunist try by Knox brought what proved to be the decider. He turned on a throw-in from the right and drove for goal from 30 yards. The ball travelled just about ankle level and was in the net on the far side before Madden realised it was on its way.

May had the ball in the net again before half-time with a well-taken effort but the linesman had signalled offside.

A single goal was no great advantage at half-time with the gale to face for 45 minutes and few would have taken an even bet in favour of the Loons. But the second half hadn't gone far before it became evident that Forfar had control of things.

Knox, Milne and Fyfe were strong and steady in the middle and so the backs were able to stay out close to the visiting wingers and largely snuff out the danger they had presented earlier, Phillip did not look likely to be beaten from a distance.

There was a Clydebank effort which took wood but that was matched by a shot from Davis at the other end which hit the crossbar and deserved to score. The Forfar defence was not making any serious mistakes and as the game progressed it became more and more evident that Clydebank needed the help of a bad mistake to get through.

Honours, therefore, to the home defence for these two points while Knox and May were good link men. There was not enough response from the home forwards, of whom Wyles was best in the first-half and Davis came on to a good game in the second.

The two points from this game brought Forfar up to their total for last season.

but they remain in seventh place.

Aberdeen Evening Express

With a strong wind in their backs, Forfar dominated the first-half play at Station Park.

Forfar's player manager Jake Young called off with a groin injury and Fyfe deputised.

Forfar were early on the mark, with a try by Wyles. Then a shot by Davis, went near before the visitors forced their first corner.

They should have gone ahead following a fine move by Hawkshaw but Caskie side footed over the bar from point blank range.

The visitors were playing attractive football, but with the wind at their backs Forfar were more dangerous

Twice in quick succession they went near with shots from Knox and Dick. Knox scored in 24 minutes with great first-time thunderbolt from all of 30 yards. Forfar missed an easy chance to go further ahead, when no less than four of them missed from only yards out

Clydebank still showed attractive touches, but were poor in front of goal. A fine shot by Tommy Mackle scraped the upright.

Just on half-time, Caskie missed a sitter for Clydebank. shooting past from point-blank range.

Clydebank attacked straight from the restart with the wind in their favour but Caskie shot past. Love burst through but passed across the goal mouth when shot was called for. Then O'Brien shot over the bar

At the other end Madden saved, point blank from Tommy Mackle. Offside robbed Caskie of a goal and then Forfar came back with a good run by Wyles.

Forfar might have had & penalty when Dick was brought down. Soon, afterwards

Davis hit the bar for Forfar. The Visitors were clever but had little punch.
