Match Report

Clydebank Press

The Steedman brothers' long-term youth plan for Bankies seems to be paying off at last. This was obvious during Saturday's match against Stirling Albion.

With Albion desperately seeking both points to keep them in the promotion race, it promised to be a fast and exciting game. But most of the fans half expected the experience of the visitors and the stress of their position to overshadow the talent of the Clydebank youngsters, They were wrong!

The Bankie babes were nothing less than magnificent. Gerry O'Brien played the game of his life and was behind both Clydebank's well-taken goals.

Unfortunately, Gerry's game was spoiled when he had his name taken only minutes from time. He appeared to show dissent at the second Stirling goal being allowed.

Jimmy Caskie's and Clydebank's first goal would have done his ex-Ranger dad proud.

O'Brien was right behind the move. Playing with a coolness that would have unnerved any First Division defence, the Clydebank forwards bowled the ball upfield and eventually out to O'Brien on the right wing

Flowing on with the ball, the wee man took a couple of defenders in his stride then sent a perfect cross into the middle of the penalty area. Caskie was on the spot at the correct moment. Apparently ignoring a ring of opponents around him, he let loose a low one which nearly burst the back of the net.

But Stirling weren't going to sit back and let the grass grow under their feet.

On several occasions, only the quick reflexes of 'keeper Dick Madden, and the speed of the Clydebank defence, prevented an equaliser.

If the first half was fast the second half was faster. Bankies opened, determined to increase their lead and the visitors looked adamant in their determination to pull back on the score.

For the first 20 minutes the game was all Bankies and another goal was inevitable. It came in the 56th minute. Dougie Hay was hemmed in by Stirling players and couldn't move on so he sent a high, hanging lob into the penalty area.

It looked a 'keeper's ball all the way until Kilbowie "blond bomber" Alan Munro darted in from nowhere to head the ball past 'keeper Young,

With promotion hopes fading, the Stirling players tried harder than ever to pull the points out of the bag.

A corner was awarded to Albion in the 70th minute, and it was from this that their first goal came. Christie took the kick and sent the ball out to Logan. Shooting from just inside the box, the full-back sent the ball low into the Clydebank net.

Batteries recharged. Albion went all out for the equaliser. It was obvious that nothing was going to stop them.

Centre forward Hughes, cousin of Celtic's "Yogi", had tried a shot which was blocked by Dick Madden. The ball was sent back out, only to be returned into the Clydebank net by inside-right McNeil, again from just inside the box.

A fast and entertaining game to watch, the game proved, as I mentioned earlier, that the Clydebank youngsters are now gaining the experience necessary to see them to the top of the Second Division next year.

As a teenage team they have the stamina necessary to see them through the roughest 90 minutes. Give them the experience and they will rise to new limits.

Best for Clydebank were Madden, O'Brien, Munro and Caskie. while Young, McNeil, Peebles and Armstrong shone for Albion.

Sunday Post

Stirling Albion needed a win here. In the end they fought back bravely for a draw. But it's all probably in vain.

All credit, though, to an enterprising Clydebank team who until late on appeared to have the game all sewn up. Their goals were rare pieces of opportunism. Fine piece footwork by O'Brien shook off two defenders and his cross was quickly gathered and driven home from an awkward angle by Caskie.

Then, in the second half, a hanging lob from Hay tempted Young from his goal, but before the 'keeper reached the ball in darted Munro to head home.

Despite having the major share of the midfield play, Albion found Madden in fine form in goal. However, Logan sparked off their revival when he first-timed an Arm- strong cross low into the net. Then Hughes headed to McNeil, who rocketed home the equaliser.

Stars for Clydebank - Madden, Hay, and O'Brien, who was booked for showing dissent. Logan, Henderson, and Peebles were best for Stirling.
