Match Report

Clydebank Press

Clydebank picked themselves up off the floor after an early set-back and proceeded to go to town against St Mirren in this challenge match on Wednesday night.

In 10 minutes, Madden could only parry an Eadie shot, and McFadden took his chance to net. Saints claimed a penalty seconds later when Madden dived at the feet of a forward, but the ref gave a corner.

But in the 14th minute he did award a penalty to the Bankies. Fallon made no mistake with the spot-kick, which came after Caskie was dumped in the box by McQueen

And it was Jimmy Caskie who put Bankies ahead. In the 20th minute, he accepted an O'Brien pass and smacked the ball home from all of 20 yards.

The same player had the home fans in ecstasy five minutes later when he hit the ball into the roof of the net from the same position. Dick Madden rounded off an unhappy night for himself when he was carried off injured five minutes into the second half.

McMillan took over in goal, and gave a good display between the woodwork.

Bankies went further ahead on the hour, and bright boy Gerry O'Brien was behind the goal. He floated a free-kick into the Buddies' penalty area and at least six astonished players turned to see the ball lying snugly in the net.

Five minutes from time, the Paisley boys snatched a consolation goal. McLaughlin beat two men and half hit the ball which landed in the back of the net.

Several English clubs were represented by interested onlookers at this match, notably Mr Bob Shankly, now chief scout for Notts Forest. This was his sixth visit to Kilbowie in recent weeks.

And it was odds-on winger Gerry O'Brien was the man being studied.

But manager Jack Steedman said after the game: "Gerry was suffering from a back injury and was playing at half-cock. I only wish we could have had him, fully fit."

Daily Record

St Mirren, third from the bottom of Division One, found little consolation in this friendly with Second Division Clydebank last night.

Saints took the lead in seven minutes through McFadden. Clydebank were awarded a penalty when McQueen pulled Caskie down in the box. Fallon scored from the spot.

Then, in a six minute scoring spell, Caskie scored twice to make it 3-1 for Bankies.

O'Brien got Clydebank's fourth goal with a slow lob from a free kick.

Four minutes from the end, St. Mirren got a consolation goal from McLaughlin.
