Match Report

Leven Mail

This match was poor stuff indeed for the Bayview fans to stomach so soon after three glorious fighting cup ties. The clash was not nearly as hard as the two penalties and three bookings might suggest, and excitement was pretty thin on the ground.

The Fifers were perhaps a little fortunate to finish up on level terms against a Clydebank outfit which was only marginally better. Scrappy, inaccurate play was the order of the day and whilst Clydebank made the better going in the first half, East Fife had just as many chances in front of goal.

Neither side looked as if they were at all concerned about finishing in the top six league positions, to guarantee them a cup ticket, and the only thing which stopped the match becoming one long yawn was the star performance by referee Dempsey and his linesmen.

They were responsible for some decisions which were, to say the least, controversial, and after the first few minutes of the match the fans on both sides kept up a barrage of jeers at the officials which went well beyond the usual remarks about spectacles and rule books.

But perhaps the most surprising and disappointing aspect of this match did not concern players or officials. For a side which had just given three first division sides and 20,000 spectators a good run for their money in three rousing cup games, Saturday's attendance at Bayview was abysmal.

Just one thousand five hundred and three souls turned up to watch, which means that the Fifers' best cup run for years has earned them not one single extra regular fan. Management and players must be wondering what sort of performance they have to put on to get the Bayview turnstiles clicking again. Perhaps Methil does not deserve first division football after all.

At any rate, while Saturday's game was nothing to shout about, paradoxically a couple of thousand extra voices on the terracing might have made all the difference.

The Fife team showed several changes from the cup squad, with Thomson and Bernard, who had a very promising game, coming in and Pat Quinn on the sidelines in the number 12 jersey. George Dewar was rested.

The Bankies, with both keepers on the injured list, fielded a trialist between the uprights who turned in a competent enough performance.

The game got off to a controversial start, with O'Brien netting what looked like a perfectly good goal in 13 minutes after beating two men, but the ref surprisingly blew for an offside infringement.

Munro should have got his name on the scoresheet a minute later when he was left with only the keeper to beat but he fluffed his chance. Gorman had to dive to stop a McGinnigan shot, but then the Bankies opened the scoring. Martis miskicked a clearance in 22 minutes, and O'Brien put home a 25-yard left-foot shot into the corner of the net, with Gorman well beaten.

Munro missed a couple of good chances for the visitors before Finlayson, through on his own, was brought down by Ruddy. Appeals for a penalty went unheeded and the free kick had to be taken twice before Referee Dempsey was satisfied, but the parting shot from McQuade went well wide. A Bernard effort in 3 minutes was just held by the keeper and two minutes later Mitchell pulled down Miller in the box. The Fifers made no mistake from the spot, to put their side on level terms.

A Bernard rocket in 4 minutes looked as though it was net-bound for all of 30 yards, but Newman pulled off a good save.

Nine minutes after the interval Miller fluffed his chance to put the Fifers ahead. He was fouled by Ruddy and Referee Dempsey pointed to the penalty spot. A show of dissent by O'Brien earned him a booking.

Miller stepped up to take the kick, but he placed it in exactly the same position as his earlier effort and paid for it by seeing Newman right on target to save.

Just 30 seconds after the kick, Ruddy pulled down Miller and his name went into the wee black book. Towards the end both sides sharpened up a little and there were some good goal efforts. A long-range Miller shot from the wing was well held by Newman and the Fifers were just robbed in a goalmouth scramble in 72 minutes when a Borthwick effort was cleared off the line.

Bobby Waddell was booked for making comments to the referee and with nine minutes to go the Fifers substituted Pat Quinn for Bernard, but there was little the veteran could do in the time remaining to try to whip up a goal. A Cairns long-range shot just failed, and just on time Gorman did well to come out and block a shot from the inrushing Caskie, who was through on his own.

Sunday Post

Maybe it was plain reaction to their nerve tingling encounters in the Cup, but East Fife didn't really click until halfway through the first period.

They had most of the running in the second half, and only some slick work by Clydebank's trialist 'keeper and untidy finishing, kept the score down,

Bankies scored in the 21st minute, when John Martis hit a half-hearted clearance straight to O'Brien's feet, and the winger found the net from 25 yards.

East Fife equalised 14 minutes later, when right-back, Mitchell grounded Bertie Miller as the winger weaved his way through.

Miller took the spot kick and sent the 'keeper the wrong way. In the 52nd minute, East Fife gained another penalty, but this time Miller made a hash of it.

As a result of this incident, O'Brien was booked for dissent, and Ruddy for a second foul on Miller. East Fife's Bobby Waddell was also booked.

Sunday Mail

This was poor stuff for the Bayview fans to stomach so soon after three hard-fought cup ties. The match was not nearly as hard as the two penalties and three bookings would suggest.

In 22 minutes, however, O'Brien was onside to whip home a bad Martis clearance from 25 yards. Then Miller was pulled down by Mitchell in the box and when Miller took the spot kick himself he gave Newman no chance.

The Bankies conceded their second penalty and collected two bookings. Miller was soon after the interval fouled by Ruddy. He again took the spot kick himself, but it was a carbon copy of the first and Newman saved.
