Match Report

Berwick Advertiser

Clydebank must be sick of the sight of Berwick Rangers already and the season is only a matter of weeks old. The Tweedsiders have now scored seven times against the Glasgow team in two matches. Last night, Paterson was the best player afield, and if his good form at half-back continues, Rangers may have found the answer to their midfield problems.

Berwick were quickly into their stride last evening. Bowron headed for goal in the opening seconds but from the clearance Clydebank moved upfield and Wallace had to look lively to tip a Hawkshaw shot away. The Bankies inside man was the star of the first meeting between the two sides in Section six but he faded quickly as the pace was sustained.

Even in the first few minutes last night it was discernible Rangers were keeping to a strict 4-2-4 formation with Paterson and 'Wee Hammy operating in the mid section. It was a good combination with Johnny Hamilton's neat flicks and Dave Paterson's strong running and accurate forward passing making headway to the visitor's goal.

For once the Berwick front men did not squander so many of the chances set before them. There was confidence in their running and passing but unfortunately on too many Occasions their shooting was a little awry.

With fifteen minutes gone Hawk- shaw went off for treatment to return shortly while Henderson left the park for good to be replaced by Grey. It was the signal for Ken Bowron to again prove his worth as the scorer of the unexpected goal.

It was a typical Bowron effort. A poor pass back started to grind to a halt before it reached the clutching arms of Madden. Berwick's inside left appeared as if from nowhere to collect the ball round the stranded goalkeeper and tap home. Berwick strode forward again and in the nineteenth minute after bravely eluded a tackle from full back Mitchell Kennedy crossed for Vint to thrust the ball into the net with his body.

The following 15 minutes passed with some unexpectedly scrappy play broken only by a good but high Paterson shot and some intricate play from Johnny Hamilton. The ex-Hearts player must be indestructible as he received some rough punishment in the second period from a frustrated Bankies defence obviously keen on limiting Berwick's winning total rather than saving the game.

Before the break Caskie from close in induced a great leap from Wallace who fingertipped his shot away onto Haig's head and over the line for a corner. The "keeper might well have been beaten comprehensively just after this when Caskie running in from the right cut the ball back instead of shooting with the goal gaping in front of him.

From here play drifted quickly to Madden's goal area. The ball was half cleared by the nervous Glaswegian defence and Paterson snapped up the chance 30 yards out. It was as fine a shot as has been seen at Shielfield all season but Madden who it must be said saved his side from a drubbing last night proved himself equal to the moment and pulled the ball down.

The second period lacked the bite of the first 45 minutes which had kept the crowd of around 500 interested. Berwick certainly continued to press with Paterson again to the fore with a fine effort and Bowron foiled as he shot on the turn on the line.

Ruddy was booked for a tackle on Paterson in the 59th minute and six minutes later Munro earned a lecture and a booking for a flash of temper. It was however at no time a dirty encounter and the first caution was a harsh decision.

The night was Rangers after Jim Hamilton replaced Kennedy not through any work of the substitute's, who played out the game on the left wing out of touch and offering only the odd intelligent flick or pass, but thanks to Paterson who rose high above the visiting defence to head home off the underneath of the bar from a curling Haig free kick.

Daily Record

Berwick Rangers goal famine ended last night in the League Cup when after 16 minutes, Ken Bowron pounced on a faulty pass back, rounded the 'keeper and netted. Three minutes later winger Vint added a second.

Two minutes before the interval Clydebank were awarded a free kick eight yards out, but Munro's shot was cleared.

After the interval Ruddy had his name taken after a foul on Paterson, and then Munro had his name entered for a display of temper.

In 70 minutes Rangers got a third when Paterson rose above the defence to head a Haig free kick home. Before the end Madden brought off two fine saves from the home forwards.
