Match Report

Forfar Despatch

A turn at last in the long lane and if it wasn't a sensational turn, maybe it will be all the better for that.

The Loons deserved to win and they could have won by a wider margin, especially if the second half chances had been taken. They were a bit more penetrative with Ian Stewart back among the forwards and it was significant that he scored two of the goals and made the third.

But this Clydebank team needn't stay down at the bottom of the league either. There was plenty of individual cleverness but a lack of directness which robbed their good play of punch where it finally counts - in the getting of goals.

Manager Young had Syme back in the double centre-half position and it was a better defence even if Hamilton, usually so steady, had a bit of an off day.

The Loons opened the scoring in the 18th minute but there had been near things before that. Dick hit the crossbar with a header and Wyles failed with a header from a Mackle cross when it seemed impossible to avoid scoring. There was another near thing when the Dumbarton goalkeeper just got a Mackle shot close to the post.

Then a long, wind-helped clearance by Phillip landed well beyond the centreline and was diverted across field to Stewart who sent the right back the wrong way and steadied to place a nice shot clear of the 'keeper.

Fourteen minutes and much effort later a Mackle corner cleared everybody in the goal area and Stewart rose high to head sharply down and into the net.

Within a minute a forward pass found O'Brien in what looked an offside position but he went on, slipped the ball to McGhee and picked up his return to score from close in.

Four minutes from the interval Stewart and Madden went up together for a Wyles centre almost to the goal-line, the 'keeper pawed the ball away weakly from Stewart's head, and Dick was waiting to put it home.

Clydebank brought on McMillan for McGonigal in an effort to break Forfar's supremacy in the air near goal and he did make some difference but not in finishing power. The second half was hard fought but Forfar had also lost their punch near goal, there being some amazing failures with gilt-edged chances. Stewart's inclusion was the main factor in Forfar's better showing but the attack was badly unbalanced with Mackle, who has so often been playing link, too often failing to hare into the open space when the men behind him were in possession and looking for a place to put forward a useful ball.

But it was a win, a deserved win, and it could be the start at last to better things. It was good to see Stewart obviously gaining in confidence but the referee, generally good, might have given him more protection.

Sunday Post

Forfar left-winger Ian Stewart put his side back on the winning trail again. Ian scored two of the homesters' goals and had a hand in the third.

It was only Stewart's second full game since he broke his leg last winter but he was pretty near his tantalising best. His first goal followed a defensive lapse which he cleverly exploited, and his second was a header from a Mackle corner.

The winger challenged Madden to a high ball, which the 'keeper dropped for Dick to score the Loons' third.

Bankies had a clever inside trio, whose dribbling was very much better than Forfar's. But they lacked marksmen to take advantage of the confusion which they spread in the home defence.

Sunday Mail

The man who put Forfar on the winning trail was their left winger Ian Stewart, who notched two of their goals and had a hand in the third.

Forfar had most of the early pressure and Stewart put them ahead in the 18th minute when he picked up a bad clearance, rounded Mitchell and drove into the net. His header in the 32nd minute from a Mackle flag kick put them further ahead.

O'Brien pulled one back for the visitors when he beat three defenders and scored from McGhee's return pass.

Dick made it three for Forfar shortly before the interval but there was no further scoring in a scrappy colourless second half
