Match Report

Clydebank Press

Jimmy Wilson for Tommy McGhee on the right wing was the only change in the Bankies team from the side that lost the previous day at Dumbarton. But the way the Bankies played in this game was so different from the previous day's performance that you would have thought the whole team had been changed.

The Bankies found a new lease of life and would have scored more than three goals had it not been for one thing - goalkeeper Reilly.

He was in tremendous form with three brilliant second-half saves that stick out in particular and numerous others throughout the match.

From the kick-off it was obvious that the Bankies meant business. Shots from Jimmy Caskie and Dougie Hay in close succession set the pattern of play.

Alan Munro gave Reilly the shock of his life when the inside-left returned a drop-kick from the keeper first-time. Munro's shot was on target but Reilly managed to save.

Alan Munro put the Bankies ahead in the 14th minute. A combined move between Hay, Mitchell and Kane who passed to Caskie who beat the full back before cutting back across goal, lead to the goal.

The cut-back was aimed for Kane but it went behind him and it also went behind Hay who had also come running in but thankfully it found Alan Munro, who coolly tapped the ball home.

It was almost 2-0 in the 23rd minute. A Jimmy Wilson cross was hit first-time by David Mitchell and to make the goalkeeper's job even more tricky, Peter Kane flicked it on but Reilly was not to be beaten.

A minute later, however, he was beaten. A Bobby Love pass gave Jimmy Wilson the ideal opportunity to shoot but the winger's shot was deflected up into the air by right half Munro of Montrose, confusing the keeper. As the ball came down, Kane nodded home.

Hay came upfield and was unfortunate to see his header from a Jimmy Wilson free-kick go narrowly past the post.

Montrose outside-left Johnston took advantage of a slip by Jim Fallon and pounced on the ball. As he made his way goalward he clearly used a hand to control the ball. The linesman signalled that he had seen this but the referee allowed play to go on and Johnston went clean through, only to put the ball past the post.

Ten minutes after his first header, Hay came upfield again to try his luck this time with a header from a Jimmy Caskie corner. But this effort suffered the same fate as his first and went past.

Four minutes from the interval, Caskie put Clydebank further ahead. He took a neat flick from Alan Munro first-time from about six yards out and hit it into the net via the post.

With the fans chanting "We want four," Clydebank started the second half full of confidence... maybe too much confidence for they failed to add to their score.

Not that they didn't try. Only a superb save from Reilly prevented Jimmy Wilson netting with a fierce shot after Bobby Love had set him up.

Dennis Ruddy was booked in the 61st. minute when he pulled Montrose centre-forward Young's jersey as the lanky forward was going through.
