Match Report

The match between Montrose and Clydebank was much livelier than recent encounters and the 1-1 result was about right although the visitors' equaliser did not come until the 88th minute. Clydebank brought quite a few supporters with them, one of whom sounded a trumpet call from time to time. This and rhythmic shouting of 'Bankies' to a well organised hand clap helped to create atmosphere and that, perhaps, had something to do with there being a bit more life about the game. Some more of this from the Montrose crowd might do the world of good instead of critical calls and the fail-me-never advice to the whistler - "Come on ref.- open yer e'en".

There was no scoring in the first half but play moved quickly and at no time was it dull. Both goalkeepers were often in action but not as much as they should have been. Time and again excellent moves ended up with the ball being sent along to goalmouth and then to touch. This finishing applied to both teams.

The Clydebank defence was sound and did not give much away but it was caught on the hop in the 78th minute when Falconer scored for Montrose. Goalkeeper McLaughlan had dealt with a shot by Kemp but did not get the ball away and while defenders ran in to assist the home centre got it home.

The last 15 minutes saw a build up of excitement. It looked as though Montrose might increase their lead but, instead, they had to concede a point. Two minutes from time Joe Rankine, who had played an impressive game at inside right, scored from short range when there were a lot of players in the goalmouth.

In the Montrose team Strathdee gave the best all-round display. He defended well and was only occasionally beaten by his opponent. Better still he continuously worked the ball upfield and his placing was effective.

The half line was steady without being spectacular. In attack Jimmy Kemp played his best home game for some time and Falconer led the line well. Dickson is best when trying a first-timer and although he did not score he came near the target on several occasions.

In Clydebank team McLachlan was good in goal and had a pair of steady backs before him. Russell led the aggressively and got most support from Joe Rankine.
