Match Report

Clydebank Press

Stenhousemuir showed that their 5-1 victory over Stirling Albion last Saturday was no fluke when they completely demoralised a confident Clydebank side on Tuesday night. The "Warriors" now go on to meet East Stirling in the final.

The Bankies were on the defensive right from the kick-off as Stenhousemuir started to probe the home defence. However it was not until seven minutes before half-time that they managed to score... and they have Bobby Love to thank for setting left-winger Rooney up with the easiest of chances.

Love got the ball just outside his penalty area and decided to turn the ball back to goalkeeper Mick McDonald but his pass-back was nowhere near hard enough and Rooney nipped in, took the ball round McDonald and scored.

This particular incident highlighted a fault common to both teams... their inability to pass the ball correctly after making the openings.

The biggest cheer of the first half from the small home crowd was when a dog ran on to the field, complete with its own football between its teeth. But when it realised nobody wanted to take him on, it trooped dejectedly off the park.

Tommy McGhee came on for the black-haired Jimmy Wilson at the start of the second half and came very close to scoring within a minute. Jimmy Caskie sent over a lovely cross for Alan Munro to head goalward but the ball deflected from a defender to McGhee who shot inches wide.

The Bankies were beginning to show a bit more fight in this half but the finish came in the 65th minute when the "Warriors" hit a hotly disputed goal.

Following a goalmouth scramble, inside-right McPaul sent the ball crashing against the inside of the post and the ball rebounded back into play but the linesman indicated that the ball had crossed the line and the referee gave the goal.

Bankies badly needed someone up front the whole game; someone who could hold on to the ball and pass it accurately. And that someone is Peter Kane. If he had been playing I'm pretty sure the game would have gone the other way.

At the back, Norrie Hall proved a very reliable substitute for the suspended Dennis Ruddy and centre-half Jim Fallon played the usual immaculate match we have come to expect of him.
