Match Report

Clydebank fought valiantly under the floodlights at Hampden on Wednesday evening, but a hat-trick from Ian Campbell and a late surge from Queen’s Park saw the home side claim a deserved 4–2 victory in a lively and entertaining contest.

The first half was dominated by Queen’s, who played with the cohesion and confidence expected from a side featuring several recent Scotland amateur internationals. Indeed, only inside-left Ian Campbell had missed out on selection—yet he proved to be the star of the show.

The opener came in the 33rd minute when Barr released Hay down the right. Hay surged forward nearly 50 yards before squaring for Campbell, who calmly slotted the ball past McLachlan to give Queen’s the lead.

The Spiders had a chance to double their advantage just after the break when a handball in the box by Small gave them a penalty, but McKay smashed the spot-kick against the bar.

Clydebank took full advantage of the reprieve, drawing level in the 57th minute. Jenkins was fouled inside the area and Tony Moy, cool under pressure, converted the penalty.

Queen’s responded immediately. Only three minutes later, Campbell was given the chance to restore the lead from the penalty spot and he made no mistake, firing past McLachlan for his second of the evening.

Still, the Bankies refused to lie down. In the 75th minute, John Cumming hauled the visitors level once again with a well-taken effort.

But the match slipped away from Clydebank in the final ten minutes. Campbell completed his hat-trick five minutes after the equaliser, and with the Bankies pushing forward in search of another reply, Hay sealed the win for Queen’s with a fourth goal three minutes from time.

Although Clydebank showed plenty of spirit and attacking intent, Queen’s Park’s superior quality in key moments—particularly through Campbell and Hay—proved decisive.
