Clydebank slipped to a narrow defeat at Cathkin Park on Saturday, going down 1–0 to Third Lanark in a match that offered little in the way of excitement or quality from either side.
While the result was a fair reflection of play, it was far from a classic. Thirds edged matters with more possession and attacking intent, though it took a simple second-half goal to separate the sides.
Bankies rarely looked threatening going forward, relying heavily on the efforts of Russell and Moy. Russell, usually so influential, struggled to make an impact, and with Clydebank’s forward line failing to click, chances were few and far between.
Thirds began brightly, with Rundell forcing a good save from McLachlan early on and their centre-forward sending a 25-yard effort just over. McLachlan, who was again in fine form between the posts, made several key stops throughout and was arguably Clydebank’s standout performer.
Clydebank’s best opportunity came from a Moy header that forced Coates into action, the Thirds’ keeper tipping it round the post. But these moments were rare for the visitors, who never truly got into their stride.
The decisive goal arrived midway through the second half. Henderson’s corner was played to the back post where Rundell squared the ball across goal for Kinnaird to finish from close range – a simple but effective move, following a winger switch that unsettled the Bankies defence.
Tommy McGhee picked up a knock during the match and was replaced by substitute Walter Gerrard, but the change did little to alter Clydebank's fortunes.
Despite a couple of late efforts by McLaughlin and Busby for the home side, the scoreline remained unchanged. The Bankies' junior trialist at centre-half turned in a decent performance, while Collumbine and Mitchell also worked hard in defence.
Ultimately, it was a subdued display from Clydebank, who struggled to create and never looked likely to overturn the deficit.
