Match Report

Daily Record

Mighty Morton, next season's undoubted First Division side, won this floodlit challenge match at Kilbowie Park last night with great difficulty against a fighting Clydebank team-and collected a £150 wager.

This must rate as one of Morton's toughest matches of the season, for it took them 73 minutes to net the only goal of the game.

It was substitute Ewing who scored 15 minutes after replacing inside-right Thorup. who went off with a knee injury.

Although Morton did most of the attacking, they seldom managed to pierce Bankies' defensive wall.

Clydebank showed time and again how to knock the punch out of the Greenock side and although losers, can claim a lot of the praise.

Greenock Telegraph

Earlier this year Morton had a similarly narrow win over the "Bankies", at Kilbowie Park. At that time it was suggested by some critics that it was an injury to McLaughlin, the Clydebank keeper, that cost the Clydebank team the points.

So, if Morton achieved nothing else from last night's victory, they proved, by an equally small margin, that they were still the better team. On top of that, of course, Morton got the £150 side stakes that went to the winners.

It was a great 20-yarder of a shot by Tommy Ewing, brought on as a substitute for Borge Thorup, that produced the winning goal.

Before that Morton had mounted one attack upon another, only to have them blunted by a well-drilled and extremely competent Clydebank defence.

The "Bankies" fought magnificently feeling no doubt, that their prestige was at stake as well as the £150. But Morton were quickly in control at the start, and a good scoring attempt by Jerry Sweeney gave promise of more fireworks. Mason and Thorup followed up. but McLaughlin was in excellent form, and stopped their shots.

Loughlan kept putting over good crosses from the wing, and from one of these Mason got in a fine header, but it hit the bar.

The Bankies showed up slightly better in the opening minutes of the second half, after a no-scoring first half, and there was disappointment for Morton when Thorup was injured.

But Ewing, who came on as a substitute, produced the vital goal in the 73rd minute to give them a hard-earned but nevertheless, merited victory.

This was a good test for Morton. They have never had to battle harder in any of their games this season. In their three meetings with Clydebank, however, they have notched eight goals to the loss of none.
