Match Report

Clydebank remained without a point from their opening two league fixtures after a 3-1 defeat to East Fife at Bayview Park.

The Methil side had begun the league campaign strongly and this victory kept them among the early pace-setters with full points from their first two matches. Clydebank, by contrast, were still searching for their first league point, although their performance contained enough moments to suggest they were not out of place at this level.

The start of the game was briefly delayed while Ronnie Wilson changed his jersey, which clashed with East Fife's colours. Once play began, the home side immediately took the initiative and Wilson was soon required to block a close-range effort from Jackie Thoms.

Clydebank then came close to taking the lead when Willie McCallum tried a dipping shot from just outside the penalty area. The ball beat Billy McGann but struck the crossbar, denying the Bankies an early breakthrough.

East Fife went ahead after ten minutes with a remarkable goal from John Lawlor. Facing away from goal as a Thoms cross arrived, he produced a back-heel from around sixteen yards that lifted the ball high into the net.

The Fifers had another effort ruled out for offside before doubling their lead on the half-hour mark. A flowing move involving Eric Brodie, Lawlor, Alan Guild, Jim Kinsella and Jim Walker ended with Walker heading the ball on to Thoms, who finished from ten yards.

There was a delay of six minutes at the start of the second half after a floodlighting fault, but East Fife quickly resumed their pressure once play restarted. Lawlor struck the bar with a 20-yard effort and Jim Walker later missed a penalty after Donald McDonald had brought down Bertie Miller.

Clydebank remained in the game and came close when Harry Smith cleared an effort off the line before doing the same from the rebound. However, the Bankies were unable to build sustained pressure and their 4-2-4 formation struggled to contain East Fife's quick-moving attack.

The home side made the game safe after 77 minutes. Thoms supplied the pass for Willie Rutherford, whose pace took him beyond two defenders before he slipped the ball past Wilson. Thoms suffered a cut eye while helping to create the goal and had to be replaced by Henry McLeish.

Clydebank pulled one back four minutes from time when Tony Moy scored from close range, but it was no more than a consolation.

East Fife's win was deserved, with the home side sharper and more inventive in attack. For Clydebank, Eddie Jenkins earned particular praise for his link play, while Moy and Ernie Collumbine were also among the few visitors to emerge with credit from a difficult evening.
