If ever there was a player you wanted in the trenches with you it was John McCormack. A real old-fashioned hard as nails defender and great in the air, but Cowboy as he was affectionately named after the boxer of the same name, had a whole lot more to him than that, and he was always destined to play at the top level in Scotland.
Clydebank signed John from St Rochs as a right back shortly after his 21st birthday and was in the reserves for the most part, however he did make the odd first team appearance as the Bankies were promoted to the Premier League. His debut was in a League Cup match against Alloa at Kilbowie which was lost by a goal to nil. He would have a small spate of appearances in the Autumn deputising at right back for Norrie Hall. He would not make another appearance that season playing in a total of 4 games.
Towards the end of the promotion season, Billy Fanning suffered a knee injury, and Gerry McLauchlan was next in the pecking order and finished the term wearing the number 5 shirt. As the Premier League campaign got underway McLauchlan was still in possession of the shirt and John made just a few appearances from the bench. However, in early September McLauchlan was injured in a car accident and McCormack was quickly converted to a centre half. Jack Steedman was moved to say that he was a natural who looked like he had played in that position for years.
John had quickly established himself as a regular and scored the winning goal against Motherwell in October which was not only his first goal for the club, but secured the Bankies first Premier League victory. He repeated this feat against the Well at Fir Park giving the Bankies their sole away win that season. John also opened the scoring in the Bankies one and only victory over Celtic which was a highlight in an otherwise difficult season. John finished the season in the Premier League with 42 appearances and 6 goals.
Back in the First Division john was now widely regarded as one of the best defenders in the league, and he barely missed a game as the Bankies lost out on promotion on goal difference. This would be a low point for John as his penalty miss against Arbroath in the second last match of the season meant the game ended 1-1 and Clydebank needed to win by 10 clear goals in their last match at Raith Rovers to gain promotion. A 2-1 victory was recorded.
John was to gain his first piece of silverware at the club at the end of the season and it was his headed goal that brought the Stirlingshire Cup to Kilbowie for the first ever time. He also played in the memorable 4-0 win over Rangers in which Frank McDougall scored a hat trick. John finished the season with a remarkable 14 goals in 47 games.
Clydebank entered into a transitional period in the following season and John was a shining light in the side, and suitors were starting to make a queue at Kilbowie. Another 9 goals were scored in a poor league season, however the Stirlingshire Cup was retained.
During the close season Premier League St Mirren made their move and signed John for a fee in the region of £65,000 which seems a little on the low side. John stayed at Love Street for four years, reaching the Scottish Cup Semi-final on three occasions and tasted European football in the UEFA Cup twice.
John would move to Dundee where he was club captain, before his career would start to go back the way with spells at Airdrieonians and Partick Thistle before retiring at the age of 33. After his career was over, John was employed in a sports centre but found his way back into the game at Dens Park as Dundee’s youth team manager.
He eventually became assistant of the first team, before taking on the manager's role in his own right in 1997. He was sacked from his job with Dundee five points ahead at the top of the First Division just over a year later as the owners believed he was not the man to meet their long-term objectives.
A stunned McCormack then took up the reins at Queens Park and led the amateurs to promotion in 2002. He subsequently left to join Morton leading them to the third division title in his first year. Further management jobs were taken at Bellshill and Albion Rovers and Clyde which was his last managerial post in 2010.
John was born on this date in Glasgow.
